The Pittsburgh Penguins may have a funny name, but that's where the laughing stops. A professional hockey team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, they are members of the Eastern Conference in the National Hockey League. The team was founded in 1967 as part of an NHL expansion and won three Stanley Cups in the 1990-91, 1991-92, and 2008-09 seasons. The team has faced ups and downs but has remained strong.

The team picked their name based on their arena, the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, whose nickname was the "igloo." The team's logo is a triangle with a skating penguin in front. Although the penguin seems an unusual name for a region of the country that does not have any penguins, the team and its mascot have been hugely popular with fans.

The Penguin's first manager was Jack Riley who helped the team to improve and become the first team from the expansion class to beat an Original Six team, the Chicago Black Hawks. While the team grew and performed well in the 90s, the 2000s provided difficulties for the Penguins. They missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 years in 2002. Also, they faced financial difficulties which forced the trade of Alexei Kovalev to the New York Rangers. In the 2003-04 season, the team signed a new coach Eddie Olczyk, which they hoped would put them back on track for the championship, but instead led them to the worst record in the NHL with only 23 wins that season. However, their signing of Evgeni Malkin helped to put them back on the road to victory and the next few years were uphill.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have faced difficulties, but have remained strong even through poor seasons and financial difficulties. Their future is bright with excellent players and a strong spirit. The Penguins are a great team to watch and always work hard to bring home the victory.
