Another team from the United States to enter the National Hockey League is Phoenix Coyotes. Founded in 1972, the Coyotes see action during their home games at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Originally, the team was known as the Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey Association and was the most successful franchise in the history of WHA before it struggled.

After the merger of the NHL and WHA, the Jets lost most of its strong squad members due to the terms established by the NHL. This became the reason for the team's worst finish during their first two seasons. The Jets, however, saw improvement during games and were able to advance to the playoffs 11 times out of the next 15 seasons. Despite their numerous playoffs appearance, the Jets only won two series mainly because they had to face the powerhouse Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames.

Due to financial struggles, the then Canadian-based team had to be bought by the owner of the NBA's Phoenix Suns, Jerry Colangelo, along with businessmen Richard Burke and Steven Gluckstern and the Phoenix Coyotes came about. This made the Canadian team US-based and more changes followed. Jets star player Alexei Zhamnov left the team but another superstar came about in the person of Jeremy Roenick, a former Chicago Blackhawks. The Phoenix Coyotes soon established a powerful offensive gun with Roenick and completed by Rick Tocchet and Keith Tkachuk.

The Phoenix Coyotes first played in American Western Arena. However, the building, though state-of-the-art, was not fit for an ice hockey game venue. And in 2001, Burke decided to sell the team after failing to attract more investors. Steve Ellman and Wayne Gretzky became the owners of the Phoenix Coyotes. The Gretzky Era was marked by a series of bad luck and disastrous events before the team finally announced bankruptcy in 2008.
