And more...

One of the most important sports in Canada is hockey. The Calgary Flames are a well-known professional hockey team based in the city of Calgary, Alberta. Members of the National Hockey League, they are in the Northwest Division and are the third professional hockey team in Calgary having been preceded by the Tigers and the Cowboys.

The history of the team is one of their unique traits. Although a Canadian team, they were founded in Atlanta, Georgia and were called the Atlanta Flames until being relocated to Calgary. The team gained fame when they competed for the Stanley Cup in 1989 and won. While this was their only championship win, they are still one of the most popular teams in the region.

Previous victories include two President's Trophies and five division championships. Their individual players have performed well also and nine of the Calgary Flames have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. While doing well on the ice, the team has also made an effort to be involved in their community and has donated over $32 million to charity since being relocated to Calgary. The team founded a non-profit organization called the Flames Foundation. This organization partners with the Rotary Club to help fund one of the first children's hospices in North America. Concerned with the health of children, the team works with children's hospitals and schools, by donating both time and money.

The team's mascot is Harvey the Hound. He was created in 1983 and was originally meant to be the mascot both for the Flames and the Stampeders, a Canadian Football Team. Harvey is a credit to his hockey teammates as he is one of the only mascots to participate in fights, just like the hockey players. In 2003, Harvey got into a confrontation with the Edmonton Oilers during a game and the head coach ripped out the mascot's tongue. Understandably, the incident made national headlines and was the subject of many jokes during the following months.
