In Seattle the area had their sights set on a football franchise since the early days going back to 1957. That year saw plans to construct a domed stadium that would host their beloved future franchise and the birth began finally in 1974, as they were awarded the 28th franchise of the national football league. Seattle was set to play in the 64,984 seat Kingdome. The Seahawks lead a ticket campaign that landed them 59,000 tickets sold during that 27 day sale.

The Seahawks did not take long to begin winning. After switching from the NFC to the AFC in 1977, they finished with only 5 wins. But the Hawks started winning with above .500 records in both 1978 and 79. Their coach, Jack Patera was named NFL coach of the year in that second winning season and only the 4th of the franchise.

The Seahawks started consistent winning ways even with the departure of Patera, who was a casualty of the 1982 strike shortened season. The Seahawks already had rising stars such as Steve Largent at wide receiver, Curt Warner at running back, Dave Kreig at quarterback, and Kenny Easley, a first round draft pick in 1981 at defensive back who accomplished NFL defensive player of the year honors. They also drafted Jacob Green in 1980 who was a cornerstone pass rusher on the end for the defense.

Chuck Knox took this inherited team and went the distance in his first year, going all the way to the AFC championship game to play the Oakland Raiders that year after an AFC west wild card berth. In 1984, Seattle posted a 12-4 mark but still never won the divisional title due to the superiority of the Raiders. They finally did win the division, however, in 1988 but did not have any playoff success losing in the first round.

In later years the Seahawks were very successful in the 2000's era with the hiring of Mike Holmgren as coach and set the team up for a successful 2005 with an AFC championship victory and super bowl berth after a 13-3 record and a division title. That team featured the NFL leading rusher, Shawn Alexander, Pro bowl quarterback Matt Hasslbeck, and All Pro Offensive Tacke Walter Jones.
