The Houston Rockets are professional american basketball team that is based in Houston, Texas. They play in the southwest division of the western conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Houston rockets were formed in 1967 by Robert Breitbard. Before moving to Houston, they played in San Diego, California for four years at San Diego sports arena. The rockets won only 15 games in there debut seasons in the NBA.

In the 1969 NBA draft the Rockets drafted Elvin Hayes, they also made there first appearance in the playoffs that year. Moses Malone was brought to replace Elvin Hayes; Malone went to win two MVPs during his time at Houston. Malone also led the Houston Rockets to the NBA finals in 1981. In 1984 Hakeem Olajuwon was drafted by the Rockets; in 1986 Hakeem led the Rockets to the finals where they lost to Boston Celtics. In 1994 the rockets won there first championship.

Before the start of the 1971-72 NBA season Tex Winter was hire to replace Alex Hannum who had left the Houston Rockets to join Denver, Winter applied a system which was contrast to the offensive style which was accustomed by Hayes. This led to disagreement between the two and because of these differences, the Rockets were forced to trade Hayes to Baltimore Bullets for Jack Marlin at the end of 1971-72 season and it was during this period that the Rockets adopted there classic logo which they used until 1994-95 season. The Rockets unveiled there classic uniform which matched with the logo’s fonts in 1974. Winter left the Rockets in 1973 after Rockets 10th straight loss and John Egan soon replaced him.

In their first season after making the big move to Houston, they didn’t own any arena but played in various arenas. These arenas included the Astrohall, Astrodome, Hofheinz pavilion and Sam Houston coliseum. The Houston Rockets moved to the Toyota center in 2003-04 season.
