And more...

The Charlotte Bobcats first played in the NBA in 2004 as an expansion team after the Charlotte Hornets left to become the New Orleans Hornets in 2002. The loss of the Hornets franchise left the area without an NBA team. Charlotte's leaders were eager to bring the NBA back to the area and negotiations began which lead to the new franchise taking to the court for the first time in the 2004 season.

African American entrepreneur and original owner, Robert L Johnson was the successful bidder for the franchise and became the first African American to become the majority owner of a major American sports franchise. The rapper Nelly is also a minority owner of the Bobcats. In 2010 basketball legend Michael Jordan became the majority owner of the Bobcats.

The team play in the Eastern Conference, Southeast Division at the Time Warner Cable Arena which they moved to in 2005 when it was known as the Charlotte Bobcats Arena until it was renamed in 2008 when the name rights were sold to Time Warner.

In their short existence the Bobcats have not won any major honors. High points for Bobcats fans include their victory over the New Orleans Hornets in their first visit to New Orleans to take on their former team and the 2009 season play off qualification.

Unsurprisingly the team have no hall of famers or retired numbers yet as it is far to early in their existence. Perhaps the best future candidate and the bobcats best player to date is Gerald Wallace who starred for the Bobcats from 2004 right thru to 2010 when he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Gerald Wallace was willing to put his body on the line for the team and as a result earned an amazing amount of blocks and steals. He also earned himself a long list of serious injuries including a serious concussion but continued to play with energy and maximum commitment.
