Hockey is a popular sport and while traditionally played in colder climates, has grown exponentially over the past few decades, encouraging the development of new teams across the United States. The Los Angeles Kings are a professional hockey team from Los Angeles, California. They are members of the Pacific Division of the National Hockey League, and the team was started in 1966.

Since hockey was not a well-known sport in California, the team had a difficult start. They won their first division in 1990-91. The team played for the Stanley Cup in the 1992-93 season, but lost to the Montreal Canadians. Even though the team did not win the Stanley Cup, the team has had impressive players. Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988, and was the league's Most Valuable Player. Although they never won a championship game with Gretzky, their hard work paid off and the Los Angeles Kings were ranked fourth in the NHL.

The team returned to the playoffs in the 2009-10 season, and signed Rob Scuderi who had been a member of the previous season's winning team. This acquisition as well as the other team members had a nine game winning streak until losing to the Vancouver Canucks. However, even though the team did not win the game, it was the first time in eight years that the Kings made it to the playoffs. This season, inspired them to sign on experienced veterans Willie Mitchell and Alexei Ponikarovsky. Making the playoffs again, they lost to the San Jose Sharks. However, even the loss of the Stanley Cup twice has not dampened the King's spirit, but encouraged the team to work harder and enlist the help of seasoned players. Building a successful team takes time, but the Los Angeles Kings have shown their determination to be serious hockey players.
