And more...

Among the foundations of the World Hockey Association, the Edmonton Oilers represent Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on the ice hockey rink. The Oilers joined the National Hockey League in 1979 and wowed the NHL fans with various Stanley Cup Finals entries later on.

During the 1978-79 reclamation draft, the Edmonton Oilers were able to keep Wayne Gretzky who had been a part of the WHA Oilers team as an under-age player. Despite keeping some of their original players, the Oilers only managed to finish at the middle. The team was able to improve with various players added such as Glenn Anderson, Mark Messier, Kevin Lowe, Jari Kurri, Andy Moog, Paul Coffey and Grant Fuhr. Fuhr became the starting goaltender for the Oilers and eventually set a rookie record by winning all 21 games. Gretzky, at the same time, made a statement with a single record of 92 goals, thus making him the first NHL player to score beyond 200 points.

The Oilers were able to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1982-83 but was defeated by the New York Islanders. The next years became the highlight of the Oilers franchise. The team even hired a video analyst in 1983 to help them fuel their way to the finals. During the division Finals, the Oilers knocked the Calgary Flames down and out and eventually won over the Minnesota North Stars during the conference finals. The Detroit Oilers succeeded in winning the Stanley Cup, with Mark Messier as the playoff MVP.

More awards and records were set in 1984-85 seasons as Gretzky became the youngest NHL pkayer to reach the score of 1000 points. The team won another Stanley Cup after beating Philadelphia Flyers. During the said season, Gretzky was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for having the most points made during the playoffs.

The Edmonton Oilers won the President's Trophy during the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons for finishing on top after the playoffs. The Oilers fans were surprised after Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988 after Gretzky's refusal to renew his contract.
