And more...

Considered as among the strongest in the National Hockey League, the Detroit Red Wings certainly gives pride and glory to their base, Detroit, Michigan. With numerous Stanley Cup championships to brag, the Red wings are considered the most winning franchise based in the United States.

Originally, the Detroit-based hockey team was called the Cougars in honor to the folded Victoria Cougars club where most of their first players came from. The team had to play their home games at the Border Cities Arena in Windsor, Ontario in 1927-28 season and eventually moved to the new Detroit Olympia in December 27, 1979. For over 40 years, the Red Wings played at the Olympia Stadium but finally moved to Joe Louis Arena with a total capacity of 20,066 persons.

In 1930s, the team adopted a new name, Falcons but still finished at the bottom of the pack. It was James E. Norris, the NHL let grain merchant who proposed to change the name of the team to Red Wings in 1932. Head Coach Jack Adams was placed under probationary period of one year and managed to pass it when the Red Wings finally made it to their first playoff appearance and victory over the Montreal Maroons. However, the team bowed down to the New York Rangers in the semis.

Two years later, the Detroit Red Wings were able to enter their first Stanley Cup Finals with their lead scorier John Sorrel and Larry Aurie leading the team. The Red Wings, however, came short and lost to the Chicago Black Hawks.

It was in 1936 when the Red Wings bagged their first Stanley Cup trophy and a repeat was made in 1937. The team had various finals entries later on and in 1943, Detroit won their third title against Bruins with Syd Howe and Mud Bruneteau contributing 40 goals. In 1946, Adams decided to step down from the coaching stand to concentrate as a general manager and Tommy Ivan took over the team.

The NHL community also saw one of the greatest lines from the "Production Line" tandem Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay.
