The Carolina Hurricanes play their home games at the RBC Center, which is known as Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena. The RBC center has 18,680-seat capacity. The Hurricanes were formed as The New England Whalers in November 1971 and for the first two years the club played at the Boston Arena and Boston Garden. But it was very difficult to schedule the games at Boston Garden, so the owners decided to move the team to Hartford, Connecticut. The team joined the NHL in 1979 as part of the National Hockey League and Wales Hockey Association merger. In July 1997, the Whalers would moved to the Research Triangle area of North Carolina and the team became the 'Carolina Hurricanes'. From then on they are known as The Carolina Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes have played as New England Whalers during 1972/73-1978/79, Hartford Whalers during 1979/80-1996-97 and Carolina Hurricanes during 1997/98-2011-12. Paul Maurice was the coach for 1997/98-2003/04 period, Peter Laviolette was the coach for 2003/04-2008/09, Paul Maurice was the coach for 2008/09-2011/12. Kirk Muller is the coach for 2011-12 session.

The Carolina Hurricanes have played Stanley Cup Final twice in 2002 and 2006 and won the Stanley Cup in 2006. They have played Conference Finals in 2002, 2006, and 2009. They were the Division Champions for 1999, 2002, and 2006. The team has made Playoff Appearances in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2006, and 2009. Kelvin Dineen was the captain for 1997/98 - 1998/99. Keith Primeau was the captain for 1998/99. Ron Francis was the captain for 1999/00 - 2003/04. Rod Briand'Amour was the captain for 2005/06 - 2009/10. Eric Stall has been the captain for 2009/10 to 2011/2012.

The Carolina Hurricanes have hosted the All-Star Games in 2011 and Eric Staal was awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the All-Star Game in 2008. Jeff Skinner LW. won the Calder Trophy for being Top Rookie in 2011. Ron Francis C won the Lady Byng Gentlemanly Play award in 2002. Rod Brind'Amour C. won the Selke Trophy as Defensive Fwd. in 2006 and 2007. The best season for The Carolina Hurricanes was 2005/06 (52-228, 112 points) and the worst season was 2002/03 (22-42-11-6, 61 points).
