Ronald about the New Orleans Saints:
As a fan of both the city of New Orleans and the New Orleans Saints, nothing was more difficult for me to watch than the havoc wreaked on that city by Hurricane Katrina. In a storyline that belongs in a movie, however, the Saints rose from that tragedy to have their best season ever. That season symbolized the strength and fortitude of an entire city, and it made me proud to be a Saints fan.
From 2000-2005, the Saints were generally a mediocre football team. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the city of New Orleans, and the Saints had to play their home games in the Alamodome in Texas and Tiger Stadium (LSU's stadium) in Baton Rouge. The Saints finished 3-13 and as a result, fired coach Jim Haslett.
The Saints then made two moves that would change the history of the franchise: they hired new head coach Sean Payton and acquired quarterback Drew Brees. These changes would spark the greatest Saints season in history, only a few years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
After a few successful seasons, the Saints started 2009 13-0, their best start in franchise history. They went on a three game losing streak the end the season, and some began speculating that they would not have enough steam heading into the postseason to make a legitimate run. However, they routed the Cardinals 45-17 in their first playoff game. Then they battled the Minnesota Vikings to overtime and pulled out a 31-28 win. This carried them into their first Super Bowl, against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts jumped out to 10-0 lead, but the Saints battled back and trailed 4 at halftime. Then, coach Sean Payton called one of the riskiest plays in Super Bowl history when he kicked an on-side kick to start the second half. The Saints recovered, took the lead on the ensuing drive, and never looked back. They eventually won the game 31-17.
The Drew Brees and Sean Payton era has seen a lot of miraculous moments and important wins, but none was as important for the city of New Orleans as their Super Bowl victory. It allowed the city to rally together behind their team, and for a short time, to forget the tragedy that had struck them a few years earlier.
