The New Orleans Saints was awarded a franchise on All Saints Day in 1966. They were playing in Tulane stadium until a new stadium was built in 1975, named the Superdome. The New Orleans Saints set up their team in 1967, looking to bring on stars who were big names such as Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor from Green Bay, ready to set up lots of excitement in that opening season.

The interesting thing about the New Orleans Saints, however was their winless ways until their 21st season of play in 1987. It was not until Tom Benson took over the team in 1985 and hired hall of fame general manger Jim Finks that New Orleans finally got a winning season 2 years later. Jim Mora took over as coach that season, winning 12 of 15 games but failing to win a playoff game during that 6 year tenure.

The Saints gave Hall of Famer, Mike Ditka a run from 1997 to 1999, never to gain any success from their decision to trade away their entire draft in 1999 for NCAA record breaker Ricky Williams. In 2000 Jim Haslett was brought in to give the Saints yet another spark in 2000, who was a highly respected long-time assistant in the league.

Finally 3 years after the hire of Sean Payton, the Saints got a respectable team to build upon, despite the natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina. The devastated city saw a great monday night matchup turn in their favor in 2006, with an emotional victory for their city and their team. In Super Bowl 44, the Saints finally got a victory, on top as world champs, cementing their spot as one of the great teams in NFL history, beating all former league MVP, Peyton Manning with Drew Brees, a journey man and NFL comeback player of the league that year.
