Jerry about his favorite player of the Kansas City Chiefs:
Anyone who was either a Kansas City Chiefs--or just an NFL football--fan in the 1990s knows of the tremendous pass-rushing talent linebacker Derrick Thomas had. Thomas was drafted by the Chiefs in 1989 after a record-breaking career at Alabama. It didn't take him very long to make an impact on the league. His first season with the Chiefs, Thomas recorded 10 sacks and 75 tackles. He won Defensive Player of the Year and was elected to the Pro Bowl.
But this would just be the beginning of the remarkable achievements Thomas would amass during his career. In his second season he recorded a league-leading 20 sacks. This season also saw one of the greatest feats of Thomas' career. When the Kansas City Chiefs played the Seattle Seahawks in November of 1990, Thomas sacked opposing quarterback Dave Krieg 7 times. This is an NFL single-game record that still stands. In 1990, Thomas also had 6 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 63 tackles. He was named to the All-Pro team and the Pro Bowl.
While Thomas didn't approach his 1990 sack total again, he maintained his dominance at the linebacker position for 11 seasons, totaling 126.5 sacks. He had seven seasons in which he totaled 10 or more sacks, and had more sacks in the 1990s (116.5) than any other NFL player. His career total is the fourth highest ever attained by a linebacker.
Thomas was not one-dimensional, however. He had 649 career tackles, as well as forced 45 fumbles and 19 recoveries. He also scored 4 touchdowns on fumble returns and recorded 3 safeties. He had an interception return for a touchdown in 1999.
Tragically, Thomas' career was cut short when he was killed in a car accident in the offseason in 2000. The shocking accident ended the career of a player who was still playing at a high level (he had 7 sacks the year before). Nevertheless, Thomas left an indelible imprint on the league and the position of linebacker. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2009.
