Harry about his life with the Indianapolis Colts from 1999 to 2006:

There wasn't a lot of celebration involved in being an Indianapolis Colts fan until they selected quarterback Peyton Manning with the first pick in the 1998 draft. Manning was a widely-touted pro prospect who had a successful career at the University of Tennessee. The Colts went 3-13 his first year in the league, and they then picked running back Edgerrin James in the 1999 draft. The combination of James and Manning would come to be one of the most widely feared 1-2 punches in the league.

The Colts went 13-3 in Manning's second year. They lost their first round playoff game, but that season made me think good things were about to come. I had to wait a little longer than I hoped, however. The Colts went 10-6 in 2000, but again lost early in the playoffs. They followed this year up with a lackluster 6-10 campaign.

In 2002, head coach Tony Dungy was hired. This would prove to be the acquisition that pushed the Colts over the hump. But, it would still take a few years of near-misses. The Colts finished 10-6, 12-4, 12-4, and 14-2 in Dungy's first four seasons but each year were ousted from the playoffs. Manning was beginning to be tagged as someone who couldn't win big games, and even I was beginning to doubt if he would win a championship in Indianapolis.

In 2006, the Colts finished with a 12-4 record. They faced the Patriots in the AFC Championship game and trailed 21-3 in the first half. I thought this would be another disappointing year, but Manning led the team back and they beat the Patriots 38-24. They went on the play the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl, and beat them 29-17.

Finally, Peyton Manning had a championship and I got to see my team win a Super Bowl. That one win made up for all the frustration I had experienced in the several years before!
