Marc about his time with the Green Bay Packers:
When I think of the history of football, I can't help but think of the Green Bay Packers. After all, the trophy that NFL teams strive for each year is named after Vince Lombardi, former coach of the Packers. And the Packers won the first ever Super Bowl by routing the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. Lambeau Field (the Packers home stadium) epitomizes a football environment, especially in the winter when it can become a "frozen tundra" where the cold becomes as much a factor in the game as the players.
In the modern era, however, the Packers weren't enjoying a great deal of success until Brett Favre came to town. In 1992, new head coach Mike Holmgren traded a first round pick for Favre, and everything began to turn around. Suddenly the Packers started making the playoffs again. Unfortunately, this was at the time of the Dallas Cowboys notorious championship dynasty, and the Packers had to get through the Cowboys to make it to the Super Bowl. They lost to the Cowboys in the playoffs for three years in a row, doing so in the NFC Championship game in 1995.
1996, however, was the Packers' year. They went 13-3 behind the leadership of Favre, and finished the season with the #1 ranked offense, #1 ranked defense, and #1 ranked special teams unit in the league. They beat the New England Patriots 35-21 in Super Bowl XXXI. They followed that season up with another 13-3 year. Again, they breezed through the playoffs and were expected to handle their Super Bowl opponent, the Denver Broncos, fairly easily. But John Elway and the Broncos proved to be a tougher foe than expected, and they edged the Packers 31-24 in one of the most exciting Super Bowls of all time.
The Packers would continue to be competitive for the rest of Favre's career, but the series of Super Bowl appearances in 1996-1997 would mark a highlight of the team's history. And that's saying a lot for a team with such a long and storied past.
