The Denver Broncos have had some really good teams and some great teams. Though the team had originally been the bunt of jokes about the AFL by people such a coaching great Vince Lombardi, the Broncos have been one of the most winning franchises since the merger in 1970, including back to back super bowl championships.

The Broncos have played at Mile High stadium for 41 years and finally have had the stadium renovated to the new INVESCO field at Mile High in 2001.

The Broncos began their woeful years on the bottom, financially as well as on the field. They were awarded a team by Bob Howsam, a minor league baseball owner who built Bears stadium in the 1940's. He received the original AFL charter franchise. The team had to use used uniforms to be able to pay for their expenses. They have worn the throw back striped socks in commemoration of that original team. Two years later, Jack Faulkner took over as general manager and coach, and the socks were destroyed in public.

Denver happened to be the AFL team with the worst record, with a 39-97-4 record. They did have one notable triumph during this period, with a 13-7 win over the Detroit Lions.

The team was almost sold in 1965 as the low attendance threatened the pro football team. They were going to be sold to Atlanta, but at the last minute the Phipps brothers stepped in to buy the franchise out. Fans were excited, the team sold 23,000 tickets, the most ever of the short life of the franchise. Shortly thereafter, Bears stadium in Denver was renamed and expended to a 51,000 seat capacity.

In 1973, the Broncos were led by Coach John Ralston who finished with the team's first winning season ever. The Broncos did very well in the 70's with their Orange Crush defense that made a super bowl trip after the 1977 season.

During the 80's and 90's they were led by their great quarterback, John Elway, who even though lost 3 super bowl championships during the 80's was backed by a team of quality free agents and draft steals, along with Mike Shannahan as coach to help John win 2 world championships for the Broncos.
