Roger about his life with the Dallas Cowboys in the 90s:
Most of the time, it isn't that difficult being a Dallas Cowboys fan. After all, it would seem somewhat natural to get behind a team that is commonly referred to as "America's Team." It never seemed easier to support the Cowboys than in the early 1990s, when they enjoyed a run that is ranked among the best in history.
It all started when head coach Jimmy Johnson was hired to replace Tom Landry. Johnson picked quarterback Troy Aikman with the first pick in the 1989 draft. The Cowboys went 1-15 that year, and I never would have guessed they were on the brink of a string of incredibly successful seasons. They drafted running back Emmitt Smith in 1990. Smith, Aikman, and wide receiver Michael Irvin would become a three-headed offensive monster that the rest of the league found nearly impossible to stop.
In 1992, the Cowboys went 13-3 and made it to the Super Bowl only a few years after having the worst record in the league. There they routed the Buffalo Bills 52-17, capitalizing on nine turnovers by the Bills. But the Cowboys were just starting their run. They went to the Super Bowl again the next season and faced the Bills for a second time (this was the Bills third Super Bowl in a row). Again, the Cowboys won in a rout, 30-13.
I think the Cowboys could have three-peated, but owner Jerry Jones and coach Jimmy Johnson had a public dispute that led to Johnson resigning. It only took a year for their new coach, Barry Switzer, to lead them back to the championship, though. In 1995 they beat the Steelers 27-17 to win their third Super Bowl in four years.
When the Cowboys only finished 6-10 the following year, I knew their long run of dominance was coming to a close. Eventually Aikman and Irvin retired, and they lost Emmitt Smith to free agency. It was the end of an era, but as a fan of an organization like the Cowboys, I am fortunate enough to always feel like another successful run is just around the corner.
