The old Cardinals, an original team of the NFL had a very interesting history. They actually started in 1898 when Chris O'Brien formed the Morgan Athletic club. They played on 61st on Racin Street in Chicago and bought some used jerseys with the faded maroon color referred to as "Cardinal Red". The American Professional Football Association had to choose between two Chicago teams at that time. The other team was named the Tigers. The two teams were to accept a challenge that would send the other team home packing and the remaining team would become one of the beginning National Football League charter teams.

The game ended on only one touchdown scored as John (Paddy) Discoll scored for the Cardinals to win the game and the franchise rights.

The franchise really only experienced a few success spots during their first 26 years of playing in the NFL. They managed to beat the Pottville Maroons for their only championship year during that period. One of the Cardinals famous players of that era did have a record setting day, though, when he became the only player in history to score all of a team's points in a 40-6 victory over the neighboring Chicago Bears. That was a thanksgiving day game in 1929.

The Bidwells began family ownership of the Cardinals in 1932 and still have possession of the team today as Bill took over for his father Charles years ago. Bidwell's teams finally peaked in 1947 after a series of winning seasons. The 47' Championship game matched the Cardinals against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cardinals beat the Eagles 28-21, they triumphed in one of their finest moments to this day. That game stood as the last playoff contest won by the squad until a wild card win over the Dallas Cowboys in 1998.

The Cardinals have moved home 4 times in their history and now have one of the finest stadiums in the league. The university of Phoenix stadium helped the team reach credibility in 2006. In 2008 they reached the super bowl, playing one of the best games in the history of that event, fighting a fight to the end and lost to an evenly matched Pittsburgh Steelers team that edged them 27-23.
