And more...

The Portland Trail Blazers are a professional basketball team that joined the NBA, along with the Buffalo Braves (now the LA Clippers) and the Cleveland Cavaliers, in the 1970 NBA expansion. They played at the Memorial Coliseum for the first 25 years of their existence before relocating to the Rose Garden Arena, in 1995, where they still play today. The team was the only major professional sports franchise in the state of Oregon before the Portland Timbers of the MLS made their debut just recently in 2011.

As to be expected, the expansion Trail Blazers debut was off to a slow start. The team failed to make the playoffs during its first year and didn't do much better the following 5 seasons. But prior to the 1976-77 season, the team acquired power forward Maurice Lucas and hired Jack Ramsay for the coaching job. A couple of moves that would pay great dividends for the franchise as the team went on to not only make its first ever playoff appearance but to also advance through to the Finals and win the 1977 NBA Championship.

The Portland Trail Blazers went on to make the playoffs 28 times the following 34 seasons including a stretch where they qualified for postseason play for 21 consecutive years. However, they only advanced to NBA Finals twice in that stretch and were never able to win the trophy again.

The franchise owes its success over the years to some great basketball players such as point guard Dave Twardzik, small forward Bob Gross, point guard Lionel Hollins, center Bill Walton, point guard Clyde “The Glide” Drexler, center Arvydas Sabonis and point guard Terry Porter. Hall of famer Scottie Pippen had a 3 year stint in Portland, but he's really known for his days with Michael Jordan as a Chicago Bull. The Trail Blazers have also had 2 hall of fame coaches in Lenny Wilkens and Jack Ramsay.

The Portland Trail Blazers are one of the powerhouses in the NBA Western Conference, they have been in the postseason each of the last 3 years and are looking to continue to play the kind of basketball that makes a championship team. Who knows? That second trophy may not be too far down the road.
