And more...The Memphis Grizzlies were founded in 1995 when the NBA decided to expand into Canada. The Vancouver Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors were the results of the expansion. In 2001 the team moved to Memphis, Tennessee and became the Memphis Grizzlies. Today the Grizzlies play their home games in the 18,000 capacity FedEx Forum in downtown Memphis. FedEx are one of the area's best known companies and purchased the naming rights to the stadium for 92 million dollars. Some Grizzlies fans have nicknamed the arena the Grind House. The Grizzlies moved from the Pyramid Arena to their current home in 2004. Notable players for the Grizzlies include Pau Gasol and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Gasol was drafted in the 2001 NBA draft in the first round as the third overall pick. He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Hawks but was traded to the Grizzlies without ever making an appearance for the Hawks. In his first season he won the NBA rookie of the year award. The Spanish born player made 471 appearances for the Grizzlies and is the current franchise leader in several categories including minutes played and points scored. He was traded to the L.A. Lakers in 2008. Shareef Abdur-Rahim played for the franchise when they were based in Vancouver and is arguably their best ever player. He was drafted in 1996 and was the star player for the team until 2001 when he was traded for Pau Gasol with Atlanta. The franchise has never won any championships but that is not too surprising as it is still relatively young and expansion teams often struggle at first. The team have qualified for four post season play offs but have lost in the first round all but once. In 2010-2011 they won the first round against the San Antonio Spurs 4 games to 2 before losing to Oklahoma City Thunder in the semi final game.
