The Dallas Mavericks are the current NBA champions. They defeated the Miami Heats in the 2011 NBA Finals. This basketball team is part of the Southwest Division in the Western Conference. The Dallas Mavericks are the sixth most valuable team in the NBA, according to Forbes it is worth $438 million. The Dallas Mavericks have won one NBA Championship in 2001, two conference championships in 2006 and 2011, and three division titles in 1987, 2007 and 2010.

The founders of the Dallas Mavericks are Don Carter and Norm Sonju. They requested to bring an NBA franchise to Dallas in 1979. This city had a team called the Dallas Chaparrals, but they moved to San Antonio, Texas to become the San Antonio Spurs in 1973. Don Carter and his partner got what they wanted in 1980, because league owners admit the team into the league. Then, its fans chose the name Maverick beating Express and Wranglers. The team struggled to get a great crew in the 1980s. With the help of Mark Aguire, Brad David, Rolando Blackman among others, the Dallas Mavericks made the playoffs six times in the 1980s. In 1988, they also reached the Western Conference Finals. But from 1991 to 2000, they never reached the playoffs.

The history of failure of the team changed when Mark Cuban bought it in January 2000. The winning team comprised Mark Cuban, Don Nelson, Michael Finley, Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki. They reached the playoffs in 2001 and the Conference Finals in 2003. The team disbanded when Nash and Finley left the team in 2004 and 2005. The Mavericks reached the NBA Finals in 2006 with Nowitzki as the leader and Avery Johnson as the coach. The Dallas Mavericks were defeated by the Miami Heats in 2010. They created a rematch of the 2006 NBA Finals which was very interesting to watch. The team defeated the Miami Heats in 2011, winning 4 games of 6. This was their first NBA Finals title since its foundation 31 years ago. The MVP of the NBA Finals was Dirk Nowitzki.
